Queer and Trans Community College Student Oral History Project

Graphic of Scales of Justice

The Queer and Trans Community College Student Oral History Project tells the stories of approximately 50 queer students in community colleges via video-recorded oral history interviews. The vast majority of the students attend one of the Los Rios Colleges.

Please visit QueerTransCollege.org to learn more!

These interviews, and the other resources provided on the website, are meant to help community college educators provide more robust and nuanced support for our queer and trans students in general, and our students of color, disabled and neurodiverse students, and our poor and working-class queer students in particular.

Please browse the interviews page, which houses the longer interviews with students, as well as the page with short videos on important themes in the lives and educational experiences of the students interviewed.

Please feel free to show these short videos in meetings and classes at your college to help colleagues students better serve our LGBTQ+ students.

Professor Sara Smith-Silverman (she/they), Professor of History and LGBTQ+ Studies at American River College, oversaw the project and conducted the interviews. If you would like her to provide a short presentation to your department or division in the Spring of 2024 about how to better serve our queer and trans students, please email them at sara.smith@arc.losrios.edu.
