Description:
The Center for Teaching and Learning in the Office of Equity, Institutional Effectiveness, and Innovation is excited to offer a NEW way to support faculty working toward identifying and closing equity gaps for our students. These appointments qualify for Flex credit.

This Spring, we are offering Collaborate for Change appointments where we create space for individual, faculty-driven conversations to support faculty wherever they are in their personal and professional equity journeys. ARC Faculty have made transformational shifts within their spheres of influence by adopting equitable practices and refining their equity lens. One way to support continued growth in these areas is to create space and community where we can talk through and/or bounce ideas off one another. These sessions can involve conversations about but are not limited to:

• Individual Faculty Equity Reflection Statements
• Syllabi, assignments, assessments, etc.
• Program Review and Annual Unit Planning
• Classroom student success/disproportionate impact data
• Department Meetings, available upon request

A Community of Practice is a community of practitioners who study a particular topic, apply learning to understand how the topic occurs in their day-to-day work, make changes in their actions based on the new understanding, reflect on their roles in the change, evaluate the effects, and make adjustments or initiate new changes based on what the group discovers during this process.
ARC’s Faculty Race and Power in Teaching and Learning Community of Practice will be a community of practitioners focused on developing racial consciousness and building capacity in equity through culturally responsive teaching and/or their course content and design with a focus on Black/African American, Native American, Latinx, and Asian Pacific Islander student success.
Being race conscious is a critical piece of equitable teaching and learning. It involves having knowledge about the ways race impacts our lives and an understanding of how the practitioner impacts racial inequity.

According to Estela Marie Bensimon of the University of Southern California’s Center for Urban Education, racial consciousness is an essential characteristic of an equity practitioner. Racial conscious practitioners recognize race as an asset, understand how their racial identities impact them as practitioners, and view educational inequalities in the context of historical racial discrimination and exclusion.
The Faculty Race and Power in Teaching and Learning Community of Practice meets ARC Strategic Goals 1, 2, 3, 4; ARC PD Competencies Equity-minded Service, Collaborative Innovation, and Data Literacy, and State PD Guidelines A, B.

Meeting Schedule: Four meetings on Tuesdays from 2:00-4:00 pm in person. September 26, October 10, October 31, and November 14. Room: ITC Training room. We appreciate your attendance at all four sessions because community building is a priority and the content will be scaffolded.
