The ability to create, analyze, and present data is an essential skill set for our students to develop. This workshop will introduce participants to an online mapping app, Social Explorer, that can be used for both in-class activities and out-of-class assignments. Social Explorer uses national data sets such as the US Census, American Community Survey, housing data, and voting data to build dynamic maps. Social Explorer has a whole library of maps that are ready to be used in a variety of classes. More ambitious instructors can also create their own maps to use in class. This workshop will show instructors how Social Explorer can help deepen lectures, create engaging in-class activities, and allow students to create and present their own original maps in out-of-class assignments. All Social Explorer maps can be embedded in Canvas to be graded, which lends itself to both on-ground or online modalities. A sample assignment will also be presented.
This professional development activity is limited to LRCCD employees and invited participants.
