Description
The Center for Teaching and Learning in the Office of Equity, Institutional Effectiveness, and Innovation is excited to offer a NEW way to support faculty working toward identifying and closing equity gaps for our students.

This Fall, we are offering Collaborate for Change appointments where we create space for individual, faculty-driven conversations to support faculty wherever they are in their personal and professional equity journeys.

ARC Faculty have made some transformational shifts within their spheres of influence by adopting equitable practices and refining their equity lens. One way to support continued growth in these areas is to create space and community where we can talk through and/or bounce ideas off one another. These sessions can involve conversations about but are not limited to:

  • Individual Faculty Equity Reflection Statements
  • Syllabi, assignments, assessments, etc.
  • Program Review and Annual Unit Planning
  • Classroom student success/disproportionate impact data

Consultants
Dr. Veronica Lopez (Nutrition)
Dr. Jeff Sacha (Sociology)

Veronica Lopez, Ph.D., Nutrition (she/her/ella)
Veronica is first-generation college graduate, earning her undergraduate degree in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology from UC Santa Cruz. She has worked at NASA - Ames Research Center as an undergraduate student researcher where she did research on adhesion molecules and bone formation. She obtained her Ph.D. from UC Davis in Nutrition and continued as a research scientist at Pennsylvania State University. She has been teaching at American River College where she gets the honor of sharing her passion for science through comida (food). Outside the classroom, she works hard to leverage her privileges to advance the reimagination of education. Recently, she and Professor Karla Rojas(SCC) were selected to present a cross-discipline approach to STEM education at the inaugural 2022 Puente Equity Summit “Healing + Justice in Higher Ed.” This Equity Summit includes transformative educators including Dr. Chris Emdin, Dr. Laura Rendon, Ericka Huggins, just to name a few.

Fun fact: She is an avid audible and podcast listener while enjoying her time outside and walking her fur babies.

Jeff Sacha, Ph.D., Sociology (he/his)
Dr. Jeffrey O. Sacha is in his fifth year of full-time work in the Sociology department at American River College. Jeff earned his doctorate in 2016 from the University of Southern California, where his research focused on the male student-athlete experience and how race, masculinity, and school context combined to shape different kinds of student-athlete experiences/identities for young men. At ARC, Jeff's equity work has focused on using data to identify policies and practices that disproportionately impact our students. Specifically, Jeff uses quantitative and qualitative data to understand how ARC can provide a more equitable experience for students of color. Jeff has served as a co-facilitator for the Equity Action Institute and currently facilitates workshops on how to use student success data as a tool for equity. Jeff also serves as the faculty co-advisor to the ARC Sociology Club.

Fun fact: while in grad school at USC, Jeff partnered with a South LA non-profit organization to build and run a free community boxing gym three nights per week for 6 years.
