AI is evolving very quickly and is already used by educators and students alike. Rather than treating AI as an enemy, we are exploring ways to make it an ally. In this workshop, we will share some uses of ChatGPT in service of student learning and also to streamline and personalize instructors' work. These uses include but are not limited to: draft lecture notes on new topics; applications of a discipline to students' areas of interest, such as for use in online discussions; producing scaffolded assignment questions; producing practice problems with step-by-step solutions to support student learning. We will also touch on some areas of equitable education that only humans can support, such as setting up a positive face-to-face or online course environment and building trusting relationships. Please consider joining us for this discussion of positive, productive uses of AI in STEM education and the ways in which human instructors are still absolutely necessary for equitable STEM education.
